You are cordially invited to join the Pantry Wine Club! Once a month, you’ll pick up four bottles selected by our in-house sommelier April Pogue, paired with seasonal recipes from our Pantry chefs. We’re focusing on small wine producers and farmers who use agriculturally sensitive techniques both in the vineyard and in production, and who make affordable, unique, and high-quality wines. Every month’s selection will be different, but you can expect a mix of bubbles, rosé, white, and red.


July Wine Club: Watershed

For the average person the rivers offer all kinds of summer fun, from fishing, to rafting, to a lazy paddle. However, when wine makers think of rivers, something else comes to mind. 

Almost every important wine region on Earth shares a common theme: their proximity to water. Many vineyards have a river trickling or rushing near them, and the importance is such that many regions are actually named after the river itself. Rivers buffer the most brutal elements of a region’s climate, making it possible to grow vines in places that would otherwise be too cold or hot. Vineyards in the far north situated on the river banks receive the benefit of reflected sunlight and heat. In warmer climates, vines planted on the slopes of a river benefit from colder nights, which preserve acidity in the wine. Steeper riverside conditions put stress on the vines, yielding higher-quality grapes. Every year as rain falls up the mountainside the residual water washes into the river, bringing rich soil with it. Later, as the river floods the basin, it spreads alluvial soil across the plain, building terroir. 

This month we are featuring wine from regions that are deeply influenced by their rivers: the Loire River in France, the Miño River in Spain, the River Duero in Spain, and the Ngaruroro River in New Zealand.

How does it work?

July’s wines will be ready for pick up at the Pantry starting on Monday the 12th, and we’ll be here every day from 11am to 6pm. If you can’t swing by for your order within the first week, let us know and we’ll work something out. We will hold your wine for up to two months past the pick up date. Due to legal restrictions, we are not able to ship wine — but if you’d like to send it to someone else, we recommend that you use a licensed shipper like Ballard Sip and Ship.

Speaking of legal restrictions, you must be 21 or older to place an order and to pick up your wine. Please have your identification handy, as you may be asked for it!

We aren’t currently offering substitutions, but if you like one of the wines enough to want more, email us at [email protected] and we can arrange to get you a whole case.

How do I sign up?

You have two options for signing up: You can buy a single month’s wine selection as it appeals to you, or you can subscribe to become a member. Wine Club memberships are charged monthly on the 10th, but it’s just a recurring purchase — there is no membership fee or long-term commitment.
