Oct 9 – Diwali Snacks and Savories

Diwali, or Deepavali, the Hindu festival of lights, comes around every autumn, marking a time to deep clean the home, wear new clothes, and celebrate by making delicious treats for neighbors, friends, and colleagues. It is a communal celebration filled with hope and joy, and we are proud to welcome Shri Repp to the Pantry to show us how to celebrate it in style. In this class you’ll learn about the holiday’s history as well as Shri’s family celebrations. She’ll show you how to make the popular Indian mixture of spiced cornflakes, roasted peanuts, and raisins, and murukku, a crispy fried snack made from rice flour and sesame. You’ll appease your sweet tooth while making kesar peda (saffron-infused milk fudge with pistachios); kaju katli (diamond-shaped cashew fudge adorned with silver); and khajur burfi, a sweet treat of dates and nuts rolled in poppy seeds.

We are excited to welcome you into our space and would like to remind you of our covid policy. For the safety and comfort of our guests and staff, we are requiring proof of vaccination and ID to attend in-person events in our space. Please make sure you and your guests know to bring either their vaccination card or a photo of their card as well as their ID. If you have had symptoms of covid or if you have been in close contact with someone with covid in the past 10 days, please follow the current CDC guidelines. If you are sick, please stay home. Guests may be required to wear a mask during instruction, depending on the local transmission rate at the time of class  (we will have some extra masks on hand if needed). Thank you for your help keeping each other and our staff safe!
