While bitters have long occupied a dubious corner of medicine, the golden age of the cocktail in the later part of the 1800s solidified them as a must-have in bar culture forever. These days you can pick up a bottle of mainstream bitters at any grocery store, but come to class and let Renee Beaudoin inspire you to make your own creative bitters at home. Renee will lead you through a tasting of both potable and non-potable bitters as you learn about their history, where to source their sometimes hard-to-find ingredients, and how to make some fantastic craft cocktails with them. On the menu: orange peel and black peppercorn bitters loaded with other spices that will steal Angostura’s place in your Manhattan, along with honey chamomile bitters and charred cedar bitters with cherry bark and spruce. You mix up a Reverse Rye Manhattan and a Bisou Sour to try out the different styles of bitters, and you’ll take away your own batch of bitters to age at home.
